Part 2: Building a Cohesive Team Culture

Sometimes people say to me, “I don’t understand why my friend hates his job. He is paid twice as much as I am and has a lot of flexibility in his schedule. If I had his job, I would love it!” I get it. From the outside looking in, it seems as if that person is just whining. However, when I work with clients who are disappointed in their jobs, even though they are compensated well, it all comes down to one thing: team culture. The problem isn’t with the work they are doing. The problem is with how they feel when they are doing the work.

A cohesive team culture is essential for sustaining long-term success. Cultivating an environment where collaboration, mutual support, and a shared sense of purpose thrive provides employees with joy beyond the paycheck. This culture is built on a clear vision, shared values, and a commitment to common goals.

One of the first steps in building this culture is establishing a clear vision aligning with the team’s objectives. A compelling vision provides direction and inspires and motivates team members. It should be communicated consistently and reinforced through actions and decisions.

Shared values are the guiding principles that shape the team’s behavior and interactions. Leaders should involve the team in defining these values to ensure buy-in and alignment. Integrity, accountability, and innovation can be a strong foundation for a positive team culture.

Commitment to common goals fosters a sense of unity and purpose. When team members are aligned in their objectives, they are more likely to collaborate effectively and support each other. Leaders can reinforce this commitment by setting clear expectations, recognizing achievements, and promptly addressing misalignments.

Here are a few ideas to help you cultivate a positive team culture:

  • Host a workshop to define the team’s vision and values collaboratively.
  • Regularly communicate the vision and values to keep them at the top of your mind.
  • Set and monitor goals that align with the team’s vision.
  • Recognize and reward behaviors that reflect the team’s values.
  • Address any behaviors or actions misaligned with the team’s culture promptly.
