Goal setting is a discipline we all want to master, but few of us do it well. We know that setting goals will help us achieve our dreams and fulfill our purpose, but many of us struggle with developing goals that motivate us. When we create goals, we often write something like, “Lose weight” or “Read more.” Those are both worthy goals but too abstract for any meaningful motivation. Instead, we need to create goals that inspire us to achieve what we are attempting.

George Doran understood our frustration with goal setting. In 1981, he published a paper titled There’s a S.M.A.R.T Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives. The formula Doran developed for business goal setting is equally valuable for personal goal setting.
- Specific: Goals should be clear and specific so you know exactly what you’re aiming for. For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” specify, “I want to run a 5K in under 30 minutes.”
- Measurable: Include precise amounts, dates, and other measurable indicators in your goals to track your progress. If your goal is measurable, you’ll know exactly when you have achieved it.
- Achievable: Make sure that your goals are realistic and attainable. While it’s good to aim high, setting an impossible goal can lead to disappointment.
- Relevant: Your goals should be relevant to the direction of your “life compass.” A goal that supports or aligns with other goals will help you stay focused and feel more fulfilled.
- Time-bound: Every goal should have a deadline to provide urgency and prompt action.
Additionally, I recommend writing your goals down and keeping them visible so that you can see them on a regular basis. “Out of sight, out of mind” is the biggest reason we don’t accomplish our goals. Writing your goals down also helps you internalize what you are attempting to accomplish.
