Accomplishing the most important things happens with an intentional focus on the most important things.

This year, I started a new mantra: Follow your compass. I did this because I found myself drifting from the personal vision for my life. So, I sat down during the first week of the year and wrote down the waypoints for my personal compass.
- Commit more nights to writing and research.
- Make socializing strategic and quality.
- Fight for my dreams and hopes.
- Get back to family time without TV or devices.
- Learn a new language.
These items are personal for me and for where I am in this part of my life’s journey. The compass we follow is as unique as our individual journeys, guiding us toward our true north, deepest desires, and most authentic selves. This metaphorical compass represents our values, passions, and the inner voice that whispers directions when crossroads appear. Following it is not merely an act of navigation but a profound commitment to living authentically and purposefully.
Understanding Your Compass
The first step in following your compass is understanding what it is made of. Your personal compass is crafted from your core values, the things that are most important to you, such as integrity, love, creativity, or independence. It is also influenced by your passions, the activities and pursuits that light a fire in your soul, making you lose track of time.
Establish Your Expectations and Priorities
Everyone has thoughts, opinions, and agendas regarding using your time and energy. Ensure you know what you want before letting people place their expectations on you. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself following directions that aren’t getting you to where you want to go.
Make Adjustments Based on Current Realities
Most of us use a navigation app when we are traveling in a car. Although we’ve put our destination in the app and have a defined route, construction zones, accidents, and road closures cause us to detour unexpectedly. The same thing happens as we follow our personal compass. You will be presented with obstacles to accomplishing your dreams. When obstacles present themselves, find a new way to get where you want to go.
The Courage to Follow
Once you’ve discerned your compass’s direction, the real journey begins. Following your compass requires courage, especially when its direction diverges from the path others expect you to take. It might mean changing careers, ending relationships, or moving to a new place. These decisions are not made lightly, but they are made with the conviction that staying true to your compass is the key to a fulfilling life.
Keep Your Compass in Working Order
Following your compass is not a one-time decision but a continuous process of adjustment and discovery. As we grow and evolve, our values and passions may shift, requiring us to recalibrate our compass. This ongoing dialogue with ourselves enriches our journey, making it as much about the traveling as the destination. Take time to evaluate if your compass still points to where you want to go.
Following your compass is a deeply personal and rewarding approach to life. Being the best version of yourself comes as you repeat the mantra: Follow your compass. I know you will thrive as you keep your eyes on your compass.
